What Is Frizz?
Frizz a term used to describe what happens when individual hair strands stick up in different directions. It makes the hair look messy and feel rough.
Why Does Frizz Happen?
Frizzy hair can be caused by a number of factors including humidity, damage, dryness, and improper styling techniques. Certain hair textures can be more prone to frizz than others. If you have high porosity hair that absorbs and loses moisture very quickly, your hair is more likely to look dry and frizzy unless you take the proper precautions. Here’s how you can tame your frizz:
1. Seal In Moisture
One of the things that can cause frizz is humidity. When your hair absorbs moisture in the air, it can cause the hair’s cuticle to swell.
One way to avoid this is to seal your hair’s cuticles with an all natural oil and cause them to lie flat. This will form a barrier around your hair to help it fight against humidity.
The oil will prevent your hair from absorbing the moisture in the environment and your hair will remain frizz free.
2. Use a Detangling Brush
Try brushing your hair with a Denman, paddle, or flexible glide detangling brush while it’s wet or damp with product. Start from the ends of your hair and work your way up. This can help smooth and define your curls.
3. Trim Your Ends
Split ends, dryness, and damage can all cause the hair to appear rough and frizzy. Keeping up with your regular trims can help your hair look soft, healthy, and frizz free. If you don’t remove split ends, they will continue to travel up the hair shaft. This will leave small, broken hairs all over your head that will not lay flat and will stick up in different directions than the rest of your hair. Trim your ends every 3 months or as needed to keep frizz away.
4. Avoid Damaging Your Hair
Chemical processes like hair color treatments and relaxers work by lifting the hair’s cuticle–the protective outer layer of the hair. This leaves the hair weak and prone to breakage. It can also cause the hair to look and feel dry and frizzy. If you have chemically processed hair, be sure to deep condition your hair at least once a week to strengthen the hair and replenish moisture.
5. Add Protein
Overuse of heat and chemicals damage the hair by breaking down the cuticle layer of your hair. If your hair looks frizzy, you can use protein treatments to restore the damage. Protein treatments work by filling in the gaps in the cuticles to strengthen and smooth the hair strands.
6. Use a T-Shirt To Dry Your Hair
Traditional cloth towels can damage the hair and cause frizz. Because of their rough texture, they give off too much friction and can break the hair. Alternatives to terry cloth towels include microfiber towels and cotton t-shirts. These fabrics can absorb the excess moisture from your hair without causing additional frizz in the process.
7. Sleep On Satin
A cotton pillowcase can dry out the hair and cause friction when your hair rubs against it at night. To protect your strands and keep them frizz-free, wrap your hair with a satin scarf and sleep with a satin pillowcase at night. The smooth material will gently glide against your hair without rubbing or tearing it.
